Solving the speed problem on Oropi Road

A stronger police presence on Oropi Road has been requested to curb night-time races and anti-social behaviour. File photo.

Speed and anti-social behaviour are issues bothering some Oropi Road residents who want something done about both.

The road has long been a destination for boy racers and is also notorious for crashes, say residents who spoke to SunLive about both issues.

One local, who did not wish to be named, contacted SunLive after getting fed up with young people racing vehicles along the road.

'The advice we keep getting from police is call 111 and report it. But nothing happens. These guys aren't stupid – they have fake plates, or no plates, and keep a lookout for police.”

He says the last two weeks have been particularly bad, with the hoons tearing up the road, lighting fires, dumping rubbish, and drinking.

'All you have to do is go for a drive to see where they're doing it. I'm not a prude, but my wife and kids drive that road every day. It's horrendously dangerous, and something needs to be done. I'm calling the police at least once a week, and this has been going on for years.

'I guess the thought is that it's rural and remote, so no one will care. They think they're away from the general public, but a lot of people live up there now. They know the police are busy, too, and they take advantage of that.”

He wants to see the police doing random patrols on Friday and Saturday nights, with no warning, as a potential deterrent.

'Ultimately, if something isn't done, somebody will get killed again.”

Fellow resident Colin Vermeulen, who has lived in on the road for three years, agrees it's an ‘absolute racetrack' – but for all drivers.

'They all go the general New Zealand speed limit, which is over 100km/h,” he says.

'When I come out of my driveway, I've got to be very careful. And when I do leave, I've got to get a move on, because there's going to be someone up my arse in two seconds.”

He says he's written to the council to look at the speed limit, which is 80km/h, even though he says it's a built-up area.

'They said they had to wait for a government proposal on roads, and I haven't heard anything more from them.”

He says there have been ‘umpteen' accidents on Oropi Road, and wants to see the speed limit down to 50km/h to reflect the growing suburban nature of the road.

Road policing team coordinator Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police are aware there are ongoing concerns about anti-social driving behaviour on Oropi Road and adjoining roads, and they are working to try and help combat the issue.

'Police have regularly patrolled in the area, but unfortunately we can't be everywhere. We encourage people to ring 111 immediately if they witness any driving of this type so we can respond immediately where operational commitments permit,” says Ian.

'Please try to note down registration numbers, makes and models of cars, and descriptions or identities of the people driving to pass onto police.”

He says this information can go a long way in helping police to locate these offenders and hold them accountable.

'We do not, however, recommend you ever approach these offenders yourself,” adds Ian.

'Police believe many of these anti-social young drivers live in the Oropi community. Police seek the support of parents and whanau in preventing this offending as we don't want these drivers to hurt an innocent road user or themselves. This isn't just a case of young people having fun – they are a danger to themselves and others.”

About time

Posted on 24-05-2017 12:56 | By kinakat

I live along upper oropi road and the last three weekends have been particularly bad between 10pm and 12pm when most civilised people are sleeping!!Loud, annoying convey of at least fifty vehicles drive past my home and approx hour later they start driving back past again. Extremely annoying behaviour speeding, racing, squealing tyres etc.111 is unable to help. Oropi Road seems to be lawless under the cover of darkness and during the day as well. Even travelling at 80_100 km never a day goes by without some bully driving right up close as possible.Definitely need a dash cam if travelling this rural road.

Not from Oropi!

The statement from Police that they believe that many of these offenders are from Oropi is a joke! What do they base this on? The last time someone was killed in the area (on Mountain Road), 95% of those involved were from outside of the area. If the Police are not catching them, how can they determine that they are locals? (The only local that I know of, rides a high powered green motorbike at very high speeds down Oropi Road - and has done so for a few years)

Dont tell me that....

None of the residents have heard of video cameras? I am sure the police would be able to act once they see footage of what is going on? Get a bit of sneaky video and send it in.... that is what I would do. Also, keep a record of times.... like if it is EVERY Friday night between 10pm and 1am, then every sunday night between 11pm and 3am or whatever.... see if there are actual patterns so Police in unmarked cars can be there just around when the little rev-heads arrive....

Cutting corners is a bigger issue

I have more concern for the ever present issue of driver laziness when it comes to staying on their own side of the road. The number of times I've had to adjust my line because some clown comes around the corner on my side is too many to count. And it's all ages. The centre line is not a suggestion

Local Hoons...Rubbish..Garbage

PR Speak. Local Hoons is Rubbish. 30 plus cars Hooning in convoy comming from Oropi, Garbage. If authorities wanted to act then they are sure trapped in Oropi. Racing and Hooning for 4 hours plus and no action. As long as they know where they are and out of town then they are put well down the list or off it.Now you drivers that speed and hoon we are going to lower the speed limit to 50 so that should slow you down. Sounds like the anti smacking law, effects the wrong people.

Deal with it yourselves

No point bothering the thin blue line. Stretched beyond belief. All part of the broken and inadequate justice system. Tell you what though....if you spiked some little d***head and they careered off the road the cops would be there in a flash. What's that all about?

Not From Oropi

I have lived in Oropi for 15 years, I drive up and down the road 2,3 times a day, and Yes I definitely agree, these guys are not all from Oropi, the majority of them are from town, and because the cops try to keep that sort of behaviour from the city centre they all head up here, Its not a new thing and they just dont come up Oropi, they go to the Kaimais and Welcome Bay, Ohauiti. The majority of accidents on our road is from people that DO NOT live up here or are new to the area and do not know the road. I also agree that the amount of times I have had to swerve to miss a driver who has cut a corner and is on my side of the road due to laziness is ridiculous.
