A police chase which started in Judea ended in Bureta when the fleeing vehicle rolled and crashed into a ditch.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the pursuit commenced around Waihi Road, through Bellevue to Harbour Drive overnight.

'The vehicle has then turned onto the railway tracks in an attempt to cross the railway bridge and has lost control of the vehicle.

'The driver has then rolled the vehicle into a ditch. The two occupants of the vehicle were uninjured.”

The driver of the vehicle has been charged with aggravating failing to stop, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

A witness to the chase says a police vehicle was rammed during the pursuit.

These idiots need to be put away before their irresponsible actions kill others - good on the police for staying on their tails and a good long sentence may well deter other idiots from following them - one supposes the disqualified driver thought he/she had nothing to lose - lose your freedom and that should be a wakeup call!

If this stupid idiot had just stopped when the Police started pursuing them, they would still have a driveable vehicle.... now they have [hopefully] lost their vehicle through damage, AND have several charges against them as well. Some people never learn.

Off the road than on it... Kudos to the Police once more. It is getting to be that the Police need an Officer with stingers ready to roll out 100 meters or so each side of a police stop..... for those criminals who are determined not to stop? Now, of course, the criminals will go to court, tell of their 'difficult childhood' and 'hard life' and get a smack on the hand and told not to do it again....

Driving while disqualified...

... shows contempt for society and the Law. We need to make it very clear that this offence will be taken seriously by the Courts and there should be a MANDATORY prison sentence. (and long enough for the culprit to reflect on life without ANY freedoms, not just the freedom of being able to go where you want in a car.) At the same time, people convicted of this should be required to attend programs (in prison) which promote actions and consequences and raise awareness that the actions of one person can have devastating effects on others. Confiscation (and destruction or public auction) of vehicles should also happen to people who drive while disqualified. It's serious, and we need to make sure it is recognized as such.
