Crashes gridlock harbour bridge traffic

One lane of the Tauranga Harbour Bridge is blocked and traffic is gridlocked following two crashes which occurred within 30 minutes of each other.

A spokesperson says emergency police and fire were dispatched to the first crash which involved a ute colliding with a concrete barrier on the bridge at about 11.25am

'The ute crashed into a concrete barrier and is blocking one of the westbound lanes. The driver is out of the vehicle but there is liquid leaking from the ute's radiator.”

Then shortly after the first crash, a two-car nose-to-tail occurred on the Mount Maunganui side of the harbour bridge, adds the spokesperson.

'Tow trucks are currently making their way to the scene but it's likely that traffic is going to be backed up for a while, so motorists may want to avoid the area where and if possible.”

A witness at the scene who contacted SunLive says traffic travelling from the Mount towards Tauranga is gridlocked and backed up for kilometres down both Hewletts Road and Totara Street.

While a caler to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic is also bumper to bumper along Maungatapu Road.
