A fleeing motorcyclist who dumped his bike after turning into a no exit road, was arrested after a police dog found him hiding in the drainage ditch.
The pursuit began in Maunganui Road, where the rider was seen exceeding the speed limit, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.
'The motorcycle continued down the TEL. Police attempted to stop the driver who then sped up and took the domain road off ramp and continued down Tara Road.”
The rider took Parton Road and turned into Bell Road, where he dumped the bike, says Ian.
He was located by a police dog in a roadside drainage ditch, 200m away from the bike.
'Panic must have set in,” says Ian.
The rider faces driving charges, and forfeiture of the motorcycle.

Now he should have to watch as his motorbike is crushed. Only then will he realise the danger to which he has placed himself and other folk who are on or adjacent to the roads concerned. The message has to get out that driver's must STOP when signaled by the police. Failure to stop should lead to automatic crushing of the motor vehicle concerned. No excuses.Only then will some stupid offenders live long enough to get their pension whilst also saving their families from large amounts of grief.
Hmmm...

I feel a twinge of sympathy here (although I really shouldn't). If someone panics and behaves like an idiot, the punishment of losing the bike is fair, but tough. davidt5 feels strongly and there is truth in his/her view, but there is still a slight reservation on my part. Most of us have panicked and done something stupid in our lives. The REAL question is: "Why did being stopped by the Police inspire panic?" We don't live in a place where the Police are likely to torture you over a speeding offence. People need to accept responsibility for a "fair cop" and stop when required to. Maybe there is more to this...
Agree
