Hunter falls down gully, breaks leg

A man was airlifted to hospital after breaking his leg, while hunting on his property in the Kaimai Ranges on Tuesday evening.

The man, who is in his 40's, broke his leg after falling down a steep gully in thick bush at the back of his property on Te Tuhi Road in Okauia just east of Matamata.

An Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesperson says the Westpac 2 crew were dispatched to the scene at 8.52pm.

'Police Land Search and Rescue were also tasked to the area and located the patient about an hour or so after Westpac 2 began initial search.

'Medic was inserted into the area via a hover off load. Patient suffered a broken leg. He was given pain relief, stretcher winched out, and transported to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.”

A police spokesperson confirms the man was located at about 11.30pm.
