The pedestrian struck by a car on the Tauranga Eastern Link on Tuesday morning has been transferred to Waikato Hospital.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Tauranga Hospital at about 4pm to retrieve the 26-year-old Papamoa man who had suffered multiple injuries, including a significant head injury.

He was flown to Waikato Hospital for further treatment and a district health board spokesperson says the man remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The man was struck near Bruce Road in the eastbound lanes of the TEL at about 11am.

He'd reportedly appeared from vacant land beside the highway and climbed over the road side barrier and the centre barrier before being struck.

The TEL is a four-lane 100 km/h section of highway. There are no pedestrian crossings.

Acting Senior Sergeant Rich Martin is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw a man wearing a white t-shirt, shorts and shoes in the area at the time of the collision to contact police.

'Police are investigating the incident while the man remains in hospital in a critical condition.”

He is the second man to be struck by a car on western Bay roads in 24 hours.

At about 11am on Monday a man in his 50s was struck by a car on Wharawhara Road near Katikati. He has also been transferred to Waikato Hospital.

He was also transferred to Waikato Hospital where he remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit, says the DHB spokesperson.

I pity the poor driver - what on earth was this person doing wandering around on a non pedestrian road!

I travel this way every day and have seen a man crossing at this exact point so many times. He runs across the highway and jumps over a fence at a house next to the side of the highway. Accident waiting to happen, very unsafe and drivers cannot be blamed for this.
