Attempted U-turn leads to serious crash

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in to fly a serious injured patient to hospital.

A driver attempted to pull a U-turn on State Highway 2, south of Katikati, crashed with another vehicle.

Three people were taken to hospital following the two-car crash which lead to SH2, near Wharawhara Road, being closed for two hours from 3pm yesterday.

Police say the driver of a Mazda car travelling north attempted a U-turn in front of another northbound Mitsubishi car and an initial collision occurred.

'As a result of the collision, the Mazda car then went through a fence and collided with two parked cars before coming to a stop.

'The driver of the Mazda was flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

'Two other people were taken to Tauranga Hospital with more minor injuries.”

The highway was closed for about two hours while diversions were in place.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash, and haven't already spoken with police, are asked to contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.
