Police investigating the crash which killed a person in the Bay of Plenty are asking for witnesses to come forward.

The serious crash unit is trying to piece together what happened with two vehicles smashed into one another on State Highway 30, near Awakeri, yesterday.

The crash, just before 4pm, resulted in the death of one person.

Another person was taken to Whakatane Hospital.

The road was closed for around four hours, as scene examinations were carried out.

'If anyone who saw anything of note leading up to the crash, and has not yet spoken to police, they're asked to contact their local police station with any information,” says a statement from police.

'The police serious crash unit's investigation into what happened is ongoing.”
