Shellfish still poisonous

Paralytic shellfish poison levels remain in the samples taken along the Bay of Plenty coastline and the warning against eating shellfish is still in force.
They are affected from Tairua in the north to the Whakatane rivermouth including the inshore islands, remains the same, says Medical Officer of Health Dr Phil Shoemack.

'Unfortunately there is no change, the levels remain high,” says Phil.
'It is the same area, it hasn't been extended or moved.”
Since the warning was first issued in December two people have been admitted to hospitals and treated for paralytic shellfish poisoning, says Phil.
'At least another four have been seen in emergency departments, but they were treated and sent home. We have had some anecdotal reports of one or two other people have shown symptoms, but not sufficiently severe enough to have medical attention.”
There haven't been any reports of people getting sick for the last two or three weeks, says Phil.
