Tauranga's water is being used at a rate which cannot be maintained if dry weather continues.
Tauranga City Council is asking residents and visitors to Tauranga to think carefully about how they use water over the next few weeks.
Water treatment technician Trevor Wright is close to having to put the brakes on Tauranga's water consumption.
The council has a ‘high use' alert which triggers when the city's water consumption climbs to a certain level. Water supply manager Peter Bahrs says the city has reached that level, which is about 70 per cent of Tauranga's water processing ability.
'Water restrictions are not required at this stage, but this is a good time to signal high water usage in the city and to highlight the need to use water wisely,” says Peter.
Water use has slightly dropped off with the recent rain, but it's not enough to compensate for the past two months of dry weather, says Peter.
The total fire bans both within the city and in the surrounding Tauranga Moana Rural Fire District continue in force until further notice. Open fires are banned, but gas barbecues are permitted.
