Police are investigating a fight involving weapons between members of rival gangs Black Power and Mongrel Mob in Whakatane on Friday night.

In a statement sent to SunLive, a police spokesperson says they received multiple calls from the public about disorder and fighting outside a funeral home on the corner of Cleary Avenue and Awatapu Drive at about 8.40pm.

'The disorder occurred during a funeral procession for a Mongrel Mob member who died in Kawerau yesterday.

'Police received many reports from members of the public about the fighting, however, only one report that a Black Power member was struck by a departing vehicle.”

The condition of the Black Power member who was struck by the vehicle is unknown.

Police are now investigating the disorder incident.
