Rangitaiki algae warning lifted

Environment Bay of Plenty has lifted its health warning for the Rangitaiki River bear Murupara.
This move comes after the latest Environment BOP test confirmed that the algal mats present there prior to Christmas have reduced enough for the water to be considered safe.

This does not mean people should stop being vigilant when heading into the water though, says Toi Te Ora – Public Health, Medical Officer of Health, Dr Phil Shoemack.
'This problem with blue-green algae can reoccur at any time so always check the water thoroughly before you get in.
'If the water looks discoloured, smells unusual, or if there is scum on the surface of lakes or on the beds of rivers, swim or play somewhere else.”
Blue-green algae, cyanobacteria, can release toxins that can trigger asthma and hay fever attacks in susceptible individuals, cause skin rashes, tummy upsets, and even neurological effects such as tingling round the mouth, headaches, general breathing difficulties and visual problems.
The health warning associated with a potentially toxic algal bloom in Lake Rotoehu remains in place.
