Day four of the Tai Mitchell Primary School rugby tournament being played in Edgecumbe has determined the four teams that will contest the championship playoffs.
Rotorua Maroon, which has fashioned an unbeaten record during the first three days, continued its momentum today, posting a large win against Whakatane to lead the preliminary standings.
Defending champion, Tauranga West, which was narrowly beaten by Rotorua Maroon on the opening day, also put its foot to the pedal posting over 100 points over Galatea.
The big win saw the defending titleholders finish in second position.
A battle to avoid playing Rotorua Maroon in the semi-finals took place between Opotiki and Te Puke.
In a match-up that was close throughout, Opotiki took out the game 27-10 to finish third, and evade meeting the Rotorua favourites.
Host Rangitaiki finished its preliminary games with a flourish, posting a big scoreline against Apanui.
Tauranga East, which was tournament runner-up last year, finished in fifth place when they defeated Rotorua Gold 42-nil.
Day five will open with the playoffs for final tournament finishing positions, before Rotorua Maroon faces Opotiki in one semi-final, with Tauranga West meeting Te Puke in the other semi-final.
