Mount locks away trophy

The Seeka KI Western Bay of Plenty competition year is just one game from its conclusion, with one piece of silverware already locked away.

On Saturday, Mount Maunganui wrapped up the Merv Scholes Trophy when they defeated Arataki 66-5.

This secured them the trophy to go alongside the Gilbey Cup they won in the first round of the competition.

Also at the weekend, Matakana Island rebounded from its loss to Mount Maunganui last week, winning a 46-34 try-fest with Tauranga Sports on the island.

The eight-tries-to-six encounter testified to a match where both sides spun the ball wide on numerous occasions.

In other matches, Katikati and Papamoa booked berths in the Phelan Cup final to be played next Saturday.

Katikati made sure of a home final in the Phelan Cup when they won a hard fought contest with Eastern Districts at the Paengaroa Domain.

Katikati entered the match-up with ED with a record of nearly 200 points from just three games, however, the home side gave Katikati a torrid time throughout the encounter before the visitors won the game 30-23.

While Judea posted 51 unanswered points against Te Puna, and finished on the same points as Katikati, they missed out on a berth in the Phelan Cup final on points differential.

Katikati's opponent in the Phelan Cup decider to be played at Moore Park in Katikati is Papamoa. While Papamoa sat on the sideline in the crossover games on Saturday, courtesy of the bye, they accumulated one point more than ED to make the final.
