A court date's been set for a legal challenge to the sale of Tauranga's state housing stock.
The hearing will be held in the Wellington High Court on Wednesday, November 9.
The date was confirmed for SunLive this morning by John Minto of State Housing Action Incorporated.
'We are deeply dismayed the government is still negotiating to sell state housing when across the country, including Tauranga, there is a housing crisis for families on low incomes,” says SHA in statement to SunLive.
'We believe it's an unconscionable decision driven by ideology.”
There are 1124 state houses in Tauranga up for sale.
State Housing Action says it can see no way the Minister of State Housing Bill English could legally justify a sale in terms of the statutory objectives of the government's state housing reform programme.
The action comes as the Government prepares to offload the houses to a preferred buyer, the IHC through its subsidiary Access Housing.
The High Court challenge is the latest step in the community campaign to stop the Government selling the houses.

State houses

Considering the average tenant is not in a state house, the returns are low and so on, Why would the state want to be a landlord. The costs on the taxpayer are huge to clean up these houses regularly, mega thousands each time to clean up the mess made by unruly tenants. It is about time the papers reported on the lot of landlords instead of the average wining tenant being evicted for not paying or whatever.

We live in a country that has in the past shown and interest in HOUSING our citizens with a social conscience....The selling of the State Houses in Tauranga is a lazy arse Government deserting it's most vulnerable citizens.....You need to grow some compassion if you want to live in a COMMUNITY.

I want to live in a house provided by the guvvermint all my days, then hand it on to my kids. If I had to save for a house or pay private rent I might not be able to do me overseas trip to the Gold Coast evry year.
