A designer looking to build houses for countries across the South Pacific wants a bit of help from the Tauranga City Council to smooth the paper work.
Chris Bauchli's company EarthCube makes houses out of retired shipping containers.
In a talk during the public forum before the council's projects and monitoring committee meeting this week, Chris said he's got a market for them in Rarotonga, Vanuatu and other Pacific Basin countries, and he wants to build them for other New Zealand centres.
He says Kiwibank and Housing New Zealand are working together to fund relocateable and modular design housing and this is an opportunity for him.
Instead of obtaining a separate building consent for each building, Chris wants to work with council planning staff to develop a consent process for the method, so he can build certified designs with a flexible design base that will be acceptable to other New Zealand municipalities.
His stated intention is to build the houses on the former benchmark site at Sulphur Point and ship or truck them about the country.
He wants to be Tauranga based. He's got a yard near the port – the source of a constant stream of retired containers, which are usually retired by their insurers after 8-10 years at sea.
He was told by Mayor Stuart Crosby the council staff will be happy to work with him on the process, and there are changes looming in the building code that are close to what Chris is talking about.

Yes to local innovation

It is wonderful to see local business innovation done in a sustainable way. This operation uses recycled materials, is creating shelter that will be almost cyclone proof (and earthquakes too), and with some imagination will likely be just as attractive as many of the so-called modern modular designs. At least these ones won't leak. Yes, there are changes coming in the building code that will support approval of generic designs. But come on TCC. Get in behind this guy NOW. No need to wait for the government to show you the way.
Great Idea

This looks like a win win idea But getting TCC involved? That will be a tearful experience if the past tends to repeat itself
Isn't it great...

Awesome... they are functional and funky. Just see them in Raro painted in nice bright colours or with their form of art that I saw so much of when over there...
Great idea and solid as, great to live in, done it.

Houses....??

Just a thought but, how do you insulate a steel box and call it a cheap, healthy or realistic option for people. Especially housing N.Z type clients who generally would be lower income earners and hence have less money available for heating etc. Shipping containers are also only 2.4 meters high so any flooring/ceiling fitted inside would make the area quite clostrophobic. Just putting it out there......
And the cost ...

Chris quoted $1500 per square metre. These are not a budget item for the kiwi first home buyer.

When the PRODUCTIVE have to ask permission from the UNPRODUCTIVE, you know your society is doomed! The best thing TCC Could do to HELP Mr Brauchli would be to "Get out of the way" The only thing stopping things from getting DONE, are those who say it cant be done! To be fair, TCC do not have the monopoly on that situation - it is a fact of life the world over. Good luck getting HELP from those whose purpose in life is to make it difficult for you to succeed.
