The Kaituna River is included in the current health warning for parts of Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti.
Affected areas now include Kaituna River, including the river mouth, the eastern side of Lake Rotorua from Holdens Bay to Ohau Channel, and the Okere arm of Lake Rotoiti.
The bloom of blue green algae has been confirmed by routine water test results provided by Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
'The health warning means that people should avoid any activity which results in significant contact with the water,” says Public Health medical officer of health Dr Neil de Wet.
'Blue green algae have the potential to release toxins which can affect health by aggravating hayfever and asthma, causing skin rashes, and even neurological effects such as tingling around the mouth, headaches, breathing difficulties and visual problems.
'In particular, collections of surface scum should be avoided,” says Neil.
His advice to duck shooters is to avoid contact with the water if possible, but failing that to rinse it off.
He does not think there will be any effect on wild fowl.
