Five crashes in two days in Tauranga

Power poles, banks and other vehicles fell victim to crashes with a total of five crashes reported from the weekend.

Two of the crashes affected the wider public, with a Matapihi household losing their water supply after a Saturday night crash.

The driver of a car in Matapihi Road lost control, crossed the centre line and hit a bank at 9.30pm, which also damaged the water line, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

Tauranga City Council reports a water service line to one property was damaged as the car was being towed off the bank.

One house was out of water. It was fixed in about an hour.

At 11.17pm on Saturday, a car hitting a power pole near the top of Te Matai Road brought down power lines.

'Early indications are that alcohol was a factor in that matter,” says Ian.

Powerco says around 160 Te Puke customers lost power on Saturday night as a result.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says the car hit the pole on Te Matai Rd about 11.17pm and contractors were able to restore power to the majority of customers by 2.15am.

Power was fully restored by 7.30am when the pole was replaced.

At 6.16am on Saturday, a car failed to take a corner on Crawford Road, and left the road. The driver had left the scene by the time police arrived, says Ian.

On Sunday at 1.35pm there was a two car crash at the intersection of SH2 and Taniwha Place.

A vehicle turning out of Taniwha Place has failed to give way, says Ian.

There were minor injuries.

Also on Sunday afternoon a vehicle left the road on No 1 road in Te Puke. There was no injury.
