Police are investigating a second dairy robbery in Tauranga in the space of 24 hours.
The latest incident is an aggravated robbery which occurred at the Busy Bee Dairy in Mount Maunganui.
The Busy Bee Dairy in Mount Maunganui is the second store to be robbed in the last 24 hours. Image: Google Maps.
A police media spokesperson says two men entered the small shop on Maunganui Road armed with a baseball bat and a hammer last night at 7pm.
The men stole cash, cigarettes and tobacco as well as causing some damage to the store.
The men were described as Maori.
Both men were wearing dark clothing and had dark scarves over their faces. In a media statement it described one of the men was believed to be aged between 18 to 20 years old and had a small amount of facial hair.
The event was understandably traumatising for the staff at the dairy.
It's the second dairy robbery in the city in the space of 24 hours. On Friday night two men entered a Superette in Brookfield at 8.40pm. A sum of money was taken and the men left the shop on foot.
The two suspects are described as mid-height and slim-to-medium build and had black scarves covering their faces.
Police say one man was wearing a black hoodie and a black basketball singlet with a green ‘9' on it. The other was wearing a black jacket with a grey and white checked top underneath.
A police spokesperson says police were unable to say at this stage whether the two incidents are related.
Police were asking anyone with any information on this crime, or know of cigarettes being sold cheaply by individuals, to call Tauranga Central Police on (07) 577 4300.
Alternatively, anonymous information can be reported to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.

I know Who is to blame

I dont know who did it, but I do know who to blame.Blame the government for their desire to save people from themselves by their ever increasing taxes on tobacco, and to save some of the money they have taken from these people on health system costs. Then blame all the do-gooders who have no respect for other peoples rights and property - who value the lives of smokers over the lives and property of all the rest who vote for these governments to continue causing this problem. Trying to save the lives of smokers by shifting the danger to everyone else..There will be many more such robberies until they desist.

but be worth dairy's having counters like the banks do,wouldn't stop them entering the shop but they couldn't get away with cash, cigarettes and the shop owners would be safe!!

Many years back, perhaps 25 or so I vividly remember a TV segment about a Korean bottle store owner in the USA who had been robbed at gunpoint a couple of times previously, this time on having yet another firearm pointed at him he reached under the counter produced his own revolver and shot the would be robber dead. He did not have to face court action, only praise for his self defense.
Self defence laws

Bars and shopkeepers should be allowed to defend themselves. It's a free for all. Sawn off under the counter should solve it.

Tomahawk is just making an observationdon't think he/she's saying it's ok, just that if tobacco products weren't taxed so highly, these incidents could well happen less frequently.
Whats going on?

So many small stores are getting robbed recently. They must be the same group doing this. For those of you blaming high taxes--- get real. I don't steal when stuff costs too much. You people set a very low bar for acceptable behaviour.
Smoking Tax

Smoking is a choice, you choose to smoke, you pay the cost. You choose to steal, you pay the cost. Dairy owners should be allowed to run a business without fear and cost to protect themselves.

I certainly do realise they are addictive but they pinch cigarettes to sell to buy drugs which they are addicted too but we cant tax them can we

That's a bit of an assumption about the drugs. I agree that theft is wrong, they definitely have no right to do that, but to assume the theif is addicted to and using illegal drugs is pretty narrow minded, in my opinion.

Can't help thinking that if tobacco wasn't taxed at around 80%, which would make a pack of 20's cost around $4 I believe, that robbing dairies for smokes probably wouldn't happen. Just sayin'
