Don’t Pokemon Go and drive

It won't be Officer Jenny writing you out a virtual infringement ticket if you're caught by police playing Pokemon Go while driving.

With thousands of Kiwis getting swept up in the augmented virtual reality craze, police have issued a reminder to players to keep their heads and eyes in the real world while they're out driving.

Posting to the Waikato District Police's Facebook page this morning, a spokesperson says they never imagined they'd be issuing a road safety message quite like this in their lifetime.

'Remember that if we catch you Pokemoning while driving it will be an $80 fine for using your cellphone while driving. You will most likely also get a shoulder shrug and a head shake. Be safe.”

For those not in the know, the Pokemon Go app is powered by a combination of Google Maps and smartphone cameras, and takes the traditional format of the Pokemon video games – walking around fighting and capturing imagined animals – and plants it into the real world.

Essentially, players walk around until their phone alerts them to a pokemon's presence and they they attempt to catch it by flicking pokeballs in its general direction.

Earlier this week police warned people that while they are out and about playing the game they also need to be aware of their surroundings.

ACC also issued its own warning to players, with the corporation reminding people to use common sense while they're out and about catching pokemon.

'As Pokemania sweeps across the country so does the likelihood of injury. Whilst minor injuries have already been reported overseas, ACC is yet to receive any Zubat, Pikachu or other Pokemon related claims, and we don't want you to be the first,” says ACC in a statement.

'So as ‘trainers' of all ages and levels of fitness venture out into the real world in pursuit of virtual creatures ACC offers some common sense Poketips to help you stay injury free and ‘in the game'.”

While on Monday, stuff.co.nz reported some Pokemon Go players got one hell of a surprise when they discovered the Whanganui Hells Angel chapter had been setup as a 'pokestop'.

ACC'S TIP TO BUDDING POKEMON GO TRAINERS:

  • Keep your phone at your side when walking and be situationally aware.
  • Stay hydrated, wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately. The Pokemon may be naked but you shouldn't be. It's cold out there.
  • To improve your performance and prevent sore muscles, warm up and stretch before heading out to hunt. For some ole time gamers this will be the most physical they've been since playing pinball in the nineties.
  • Take the human equivalent of Pokestops whenever necessary, so you're battle ready when need be.
  • Move to a safe area when preparing to throw Pokeballs, and stop walking to perform the action.
  • Play as a team so you can look out for one another and be vigilant in your environment, especially if looking for Gastly at night.
