A wide range of valuables are being stolen, including laptops, iPods, handbags, cameras, mobile phones and wallets.
Mount Maunganui Community Constable Rachel Walker says the thefts are frustrating.
'People leave everything in their cars. These crimes could have easily been prevented and are very frustrating.”
She says many of the vehicles targeted were parked outside the owner's home or in the driveway.
'People get a bit complacent. They often think it's safe.”
Many of the cars targeted were not left secure, with windows down or doors unlocked.
'We are just trying to convey the message to people to be a bit more secure around their own property.
'When you lose valuables it's really frustrating as well.”
Police strongly encourage the community to remove all valuables from vehicles and always secure it, no matter where it is parked or the time of day.
Police encourage members of the public to use tamper-proof screws on number plates and become involved in the Mount Maunganui Community Patrols.
Secure vehicle checklist:
• Always lock your car, including the boot, ensure windows are wound up.
• Don't leave items on display.
• Keep valuables on you or at home – not in the glove box or under a seat.
• Keep bags, luggage, coats etcetera locked out of sight in the boot.
• Keep a record of car stereo serial numbers.
