Old Pine trees in Whangamata's Williamson Park are being felled and landscaping work is beginning on the beachfront where a boardwalk is being built.
The Thames-Coromandel District Council is asking people to stay out of the park for at least the next four weeks because heavy machinery will be operating all day.

Whangamata Area Manager Garry Towler says while it's enticing to get in there to pick up pine cones or cut a limb or two for firewood, he is warning people about the dangers currently present in the park - even when the contractors have departed for the day.
'We have an arrangement with Whangamata Lions Club where we will be transporting firewood and pinecones to the industrial area of town,” he says.
'Lions members will cut up the wood and deliver it to the elderly and needy for free and any surplus will be sold to the general public.”
The work is slated for completion by next summer and replacement native trees will be planted to replace the felled pines.
The upgrade of the park will also see the road realigned to create more open space for big events, beach access improved and carparking redesigned to be safer and more convenient.
Garry also advises locals to watch for announcements on Council's Facebook page as to when and where wood will be available. People can also call council's Customer Services team on 07 868 0200.
'But please do not go into Williamson Park for at least the next four weeks,” asks Garry.
