Council sharing invite knocked-back

Western Bay of Plenty District Council has declined Tauranga City Council's invitation to share digs.

The city council, which is looking at committing to a $70 million plus building programme to replace its mouldy and leaky office block, asked its neighbouring council to consider sharing in submissions to its Annual Plan.

Western Bay doesn't want to move into the CBD.

The reply declining exploring the ‘efficiency gains' that would come from operating under one roof was publicised in the district council's policy and strategy committee agenda this week.

'Our opinion is that if TCC is looking for strategic advantage, it should look to co-locate with organisations that provide complementary services, ie. those that are also used by TCC customers,' is the response from the District Council.

'Western Bay of Plenty Council's customers are not likely to use TCC administration services, so we don't see a significant benefit to our customers,” reads the agenda.

'Given the inconvenience of traffic and limited parking in the CBD, we believe our customers are better served from our current Cameron Road location and the offices in Te Puke, Katikati, Waihi Beach, Omokoroa and Maketu.

'You also suggest exploring potential efficiencies gains of co-locating council activities. We think this should be done as part of broader investigations into alternative methods of service delivery as listed in s17A of the Local Government Act 2002, on an activity by activity basis. We note that some opportunities may arise as a result of investigations already underway and we welcome further opportunities to work with TCC on such reviews.”

Until recently, the neighbouring councils shared a committee - the Joint Governance Committee - but recent meetings have been cancelled following the district council's decision to walk away from a previously combined waste management programme that recommended both councils revert to ratepayer funded rubbish collecting.

Hmmmm

No doubt Western Bay Council is happy to be located away from the CBD, where access to the understated building is easy and efficient. We have a city council hell-bent on establishing an empire in the sun, that has had Millions of ratepayers dollars thrown at an architectural company for its design. The dead centre of our town is the council offices (Closed at 5pm and all weekend) I believe Council need to cut back on the Grandiose ideas and attitude and concentrate on becoming efficient and customer focused. An office doesn't need to be a masterpiece of design, it needs to be functional in its layout and accessible, both of which downtown Tauranga are NOT.

Think outside the square...

With today's technology, the only council service that needs to be central is a small customer service and payments facility. All other services could be housed in a comfortable facility in an industrial area. Council meetings could be held in BayCourt theatre - entertainment?

Absolute drivel

Come on what leaky and mouldy building -currently this is just unmitigated unsubstantiated B/S garbage.Council refuses to release full details of the reports obtained to date. Something is being hidden here and TCC ratepayers are being sandbagged and misled.Otherwise open up the books!!!

Cant blame WBC they know not to lead their rate payers into this sticky web. Back up TCC.

First Move

This could have been a first attempt by one specific non council group/committee to push their aim of amalgamation of the two councils. Pleasing to see Western Bay turning down the offer. There will be a group of highly annoyed people in Tauranga as they did not get their way.

What comedy central, it really would be if the rates were not being racked up so much, the only thing moving faster at TCC is the debt mountain ...

On whose authority

On whose authority was this TCC submission made to WBOPDC? But for the fact is Tauranga City Council, unbelievable. Tauranga City Council selling the CBD properties (as is, where is) and relocating to a more affordable and accessible location makes sense outside of the CBD. These folk remind me of a 'crunchy peanut butter addv', full of NUTS!
