Fire burns hole through boardwalk

A fire lit overnight has burnt a hole through the viewing platform on the walking track near Bethlehem.

Tauranga Fire Brigade were called to the fire on the walking track between State Highway 2 and Carmichael Road about 6am to find a hole, less than a square metre.

A fire has burnt a hole through the boardwalk near Carmichael Road.

Senior station officer Neil Brown says the area has been cordoned off and council have been advised.

'So hopefully they will get in there and fix it up.

'Someone has obviously been playing with stuff. There's debris from what looks like a little campfire, so I would surmise that it's people out playing.”

Neil says people are still about to use the walking track as it's only the viewing platform that has been damaged.

Firefighters spent about 30 minutes at the scene before returning back to the station.

If this is the spot that I think, it has had vandalism from day one (Over eight years ago I think) with the timbers being hacked around with very sharp implements. But it's alright, ratepayers will pay to have it fixed.
