Library getting seismic upgrading

Seismic upgrading works will be carried out at the Mount Maunganui Library by Tauranga City Council contractors this month.

Starting today, plywood will be installed against the library's internal walls to prevent them from falling inwards in the event of an earthquake.

Group communication advisor Rachel Schicker says contractors will also erect additional restraints and support on the external walls will also be erected.

'The works will increase the structural performance of the building to meet 67 per cent of the national building standard,” she says.

'Customers will still be able to access the library while the work is taking place and every effort will be made to limit the amount of noise and disruption during this time.”

The seismic works are expected to be completed by the end of July.
