I note the reply by Andrew Scott dated 8/4/11 regarding the Eastern Arterial Project. He attempts to justify his ongoing job into the multiple swamp lands that reside beyond the Papamoa roundabout. He has missed the prime issues: -
1. The road is no importance.
2. Property Group representatives advise that the cost will be over 550m (budget $455m).
3. Parts of the project are useful: four lanes as far as the Papamoa roundabout, the remainder is dubious due to the nature of the ground beyond.
4. The road purports development as the justification yet the land is questionable at best.
5. With costs of over $24,000 / metre, it is clear that the terrain and path is economically in question.
6. If the link is 'one of seven roads of national significance” it leaves one wondering how low the bar is to qualify for that status considering that the population of Paengaroa is barely 500 or so.
Who pays or borrows the money is not the question, it is the purpose, plan, path and alternatives that raise the questions. I think that sorting out State Highway 2 (Tauranga though to Paeroa) and SH29 (Kaimai's) would provide blatantly obvious benefits to the BOP area in comparison and without the need of a toll.

IT MAKES ME SICK!

A road to Hamilton, population 160,000+ and Auckland $1.5m so hmmm lets do something useful then like spend lots of money, build a road in the exact opposite direction. The only reason for that is to take the longest and most expensive way possible to get to the Waikato. It is not actually that far away.
A COMPLETE NO BRAINER

Absolutely correct what do you think the cynics have been expounding for the past 2 years. Have you been asleep or something where were you when we needed you ?
IT MAKES ME SICK ...

That so much money is spent to get to a small wee 'village' at best and that is called 'in the national interests'. It is a great idea to widen the road to Papamoa to 4 lanes, yet that still hits the same problem as the overall project that it is a "BOG" out there, difficult and expensive to build a road on, difficult to construct a building on and certainly prone to liquafaction at the drop of a hat. None of this makes any sense at all.
rocks in the head

Other than the upgraded Papamoa part Te Maunga to Tara Road there is no justification for the Eastern Arterial. It is not in the top 10 roads of national significance and at a likely final cost of 1/2 billion it is UFO territory.A shafting for taxpayers by this gormless National Govt.

Its all mud, bog and peat out there, the cost will blow out and the tolls will run up a tab and some. A little widening, couple of passing lanes and the Te Puke road would be fine as for decades.
HOW DEEP IS THE MUD
Posted on 24-04-2011 20:48 | By TERMINATOR
It is deeper than you think, or perhaps want to know about, perhaps the best gauge on it is to stand and watch how far in the piles must go before hitting something solid, it will be a lot more than 1.5m. The cost to run the tarmack out for the 23km or so is going to be a colossal financial mess beyond anything seen on Route K and some.
ONLY THE DEPTH VARIES

A common enough saying however here it is so true, the Lakes is a mess happening, the Eastern Arterial is next on the agenda. Clearly the morons throwing money at this have not looked to closely at all at the real stuff (mud) yet in the future many will look back and "wonder why" so much was spent for so little!
THERE IS NO ONE LISTENING
