A draft Statement for Intent outlining Tauranga Art Gallery's plans for the next three years has been presented to Tauranga City Council.
The statement focuses on how the gallery will create art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge and educate Tauranga's communities.
The Tauranga Art Gallery on Willow Street.
To fulfil this purpose the gallery is focussing on cultural relevance, social integration, art experiences of excellence as well as sustainability.
The Statement of Intent was developed following a Letter of Expectation for 2016/2017, defining Council's expectations across economic, social, cultural and environmental focus areas.
The Letter of Expectation is a new tool implemented by Tauranga City Council to highlight Council's expectations of its Council Controlled Organisations.
This was developed for the Tauranga Art Gallery in late 2015 through a working party made up of representatives from Tauranga City Council and the Tauranga Art Gallery.
Tauranga City Council Mayor Stuart Crosby says the strong relationship developed between the two organisations focussed on creating an exciting new future for the gallery.
'The draft Statement of Intent shows how aligned Council and the art gallery are when it comes to the gallery's future plans.
'Tauranga Art Gallery has incorporated all of TCC's key expectations into its draft Statement of Intent, showing its commitment to the relationship built with Council and to contribute to a vibrant, attractive and welcoming city centre.
'We are looking forward to the year ahead with the gallery aspiring to provide the opportunity for our communities to experience innovative and alternative art, and to embrace the gallery as a hub for multicultural experiences and audiences.”
Tauranga Art Gallery Trust Chair Peter Anderson is excited about this close working relationship and the commitment of Tauranga City Councillors to this new process.
'The gallery is undergoing significant change as part of the Trust's plans to embrace and cater for population growth and diversity and create new and different types of art experiences for the enjoyment and benefit of our community.
'The collaborative approach taken with Council has been significant in helping shape the gallery's future focus as it becomes a vital part of the fabric of the city.”
Elected Members provided comments to the draft Statement of Intent at yesterday's meeting.
The final document will be finalised by the Tauranga Art Gallery by June 30.

My letter of expectation

Putting all the nice syrupy words of nothingness aside, my expectation of the art gallery over the next three years is that it will move towards honouring the one -off one million dollars from ratepayers when it was first proposed. Now it takes about that much every year. That's simply unfair and unsustainable.

There should be a modest entry fee placed. Just like Te Papa. Where do you go for free in the world??? Wake up Council.

At present the gallery is simply an elitist drop in centre and would not bother me a tot if it were not for the fact that us non elitist ratepayers are paying for the shower!
Of no interest

Why is it councils' responsibility to ensure an Art gallery is funded?
Once again....

The simple solution passes most by....why not get Taurangas well known "phill"lantrapist and donater to the arts, to give a concert as the 80ish best drummer boy in the world the town would be "rockin" and a 100 seat venue would overflow, and encores would ensue, imagine the arts brigade funding something themselves...... nah would never happen Phill would be breaking his bail conditions!!!!

They say the intent is "economic, social, cultural and environmental focus areas" these all went out of the statute in 2012, they are out of date and meaningless. Now even they are not going to comply with the replacement provisions in the Local Government Act.

They don't think of that as art, they think you have to for starters be of the right class, be able on auto pilot to have a wee pink sticking straight up in the air when holding a tea cup. The gulf between popular things (pay there way) and Artz morons is the latter "demand" that others pay to keep the cup a tea full.
