John Key publicly announced that if he is not elected at the next poll, he will quit politics and, we assume, return to his day job at the Money-go-round.
Given the recent abysmal performance of the leader of the opposition, in the face of a crisis and the subsequent tainting,(deserved or not), of the Party in general, John might, given the nature of a fickle public, win by default.
It depends of course, if said fickle public will permit a spot of in house scandal outweigh two pieces of scandalous legislation, namely, the racially dividing Marine and Coastal Area Bill and that totally unnecessary rort, ETS.
The former is the result of agitation and the retention of the Maori vote in parliamentary matters, and the latter? Goodness only knows what possessed John and his misguided party members to bow to foreign pressure and inflict another burden on a long suffering New Zealand public.
Neither of these impositions is wanted by the majority of New Zealand voters and for elected members of Parliament to have the gall to mouth off about representing the wishes of their constituents, whilst slavishly toeing the party line, often at odds with those wishes, is sickening. I could I cry when I think of the death of true democracy in this fair land. Frank Smead, Mt Maunganui.
