The above does not have a basic warning system to alert 40,000 residents of a tsunami, which does not give a time of arrival. ZB Radio, Civil Defence advises, if you feel the ground moving under your feet and notice the sea receding ‘Be Ready', move away to high ground.
What if the tsunami arrives at 2am at night? How pathetic, distressingly inadequate.
1939, Hawaii Islands received a massive tsunami, after which high tone trumpet like sirens were installed, and have saved following residents ever since.
What will it take for Mayor Crosby with his five ‘yes' person councillors to install similar ‘high tone' tsunami warning units, 2kms apart from Twin Towers, towards Whakatane, and call upon other local body Mayors to share costs.
I've heard it suggested Tsunami Warnings be put thought cellphone networks. How futile. School children in classrooms, all phones would be turned off. Also most residents would be asleep at night while their cellphones would be on charge.
Which hip pocket do some screw-ball persons keep their brain, suggesting cellphones? There is no question that a ‘high tone' system for tsunami warnings differ from police, ambulance, fire engine sirens, which we hear day and night dealing with human failings.
In case you haven't noticed, Christchurch – New Zealand has been destroyed by two earthquakes, followed by Japan. Bay of Plenty may be next in line, tsunamis do not give a time of arrival.

WW2 AIR RAID SIRENS

No need to spend much money, go find the stash ex WW2 and hang them off every second - third corner for the lenght of the Mount and Papamoa, that will work day or night, with a solar power battery pack setup I am sure all will know. By the time you see the sea receding you are going to be to late to escape as the wave moves very fast, just take a recap of the 26/12/2004 Tsunami, the sunbathers etc did not stand a chance.
OPTN - CIVIL DEFENSE WARNINGS
Posted on 08-04-2011 18:52 | By mandyderecourt
Why do people keep complaining about the lack of Tsunami warnings. Civil Defense use the OPTN text service and have done so for some time. I registed for the Civil Defense warnings nearly five years ago and thankfully haven't received one as yet for Tauranga. My sister in Auckland has opted into the Rodney District Council and gets the civil defense warnings for storms and heaving rain etc. You can now opt in for these alerts for free. Why do we even have to look at spending any more money on systems when we have a perfectly good system available. What happens to the deaf people? Surely this is a system that would benefit them, as well as everyone else. Why don't we promote this option more before we start spending money on systems that don't work.
