Assurance on Eastern Link

I can assure your readers that the Tauranga Eastern Link is not at risk of being ‘canned', as claimed in a recent letter. In fact construction is now well and truly underway on the main construction contract with three of the seven support projects already completed and another one nearing completion. We have every expectation that the new road will be open as planned in 2016 and come in under the $455million budget.
The Tauranga Eastern Link is one of seven roads of national significance. Those are state highway projects that once constructed, will support New Zealand's economic prosperity. As well as providing employment for many local people, the Tauranga Eastern Link will also significantly reduce travel time and improve safety along of one of New Zealand's most dangerous sections of highway.
Unlike the Route K toll road, the debt that will be serviced by tolls for this project will be the government's debt and not a burden for local ratepayers.

TWO STORIES

That does not add up, Property Group staff indicated in September 2010 that the cost had increased from the budgeted $455m to $550m and was likelty to cost more because of the terrain, soil types and generally marsh land nature of a significant part of the roads plan path. Best answer is to build it through to the Papamoa round about then stop. Take soem of the change and widen the existing Te Puke road so as it has for example a few passing lanes rather than near to none, problem solved

BOG BUILDING

The 'Road to know where' that is the Eastern Link, as significant parts of it are through large areas of mud, bog and peat, these are deep water sodden and are such that no one of 'sound mind' would ever build on them. As for 'one of seven' NZ projects of significance ... WOW, at least teh Winny's Habour bridge actual has a use, people and clear benefits that all can see. Spot the difference!
