Free kayaking on the Wairoa

Western Bay residents keen on the outdoors are able to kayak the Wairoa River free of charge on Saturday.

Tauranga Forest and Bird is organising the event to celebrate the Wairoa River as part of the Tauranga Environment Centre's sustainable backyards programme.

The day involves not only kayaking, but also fun and games for children and lessons in the history and ecology of the area.

There will also be people on hand to ensure the safety of those taking part as well as basic kayak tuition.

Kayaks are available for use free of charge as TrustPower is providing sponsorship to cover their hire from Waimarino on the day.

TrustPower will have a display on the Ruahihi Dam scheme including how safe passage is provided for native fishes and freshwater crayfish.

The event is April 2 from 10am until 2pm.

Meet at the Wairoa River Reserve at 10am, with activities running until 2pm.
