Fonterra payments criticized

Tough economic times in the dairy industry is no reason for Fonterra to delay paying suppliers, says Rural Contractors NZ president Steve Levet.

'We all understand the dairy sector is undergoing a very, tough period. But this should not be used as an excuse to not pay contractors in a fair and timely manner.”

Rural Contractors NZ president Steve Levet is urging dairy farmers to pressure Fonterra to ensure it treat its contractors fairly.

The organisation, which represents NZ's agricultural contractors, concerns come in the wake of reports that Fonterra has extended by two months the time it takes to pay suppliers; while also asking them to cut their charges.

The dairy co-op has defended the move as about boosting efficiency.

However, Steve says this is not the type of action an industry-leader like Fonterra should be undertaking.

'It sends a terrible message to farmers. That it is ok to delay paying suppliers and that is not on.”

Steve believes dairy farmers – many who will be making a loss this year – would not approve of such action and he does not want to see them to take a similar stance with their own suppliers.

'Dairy farmers – on the whole – are good and fair people, but when Fonterra takes a stance like this – they make think it is ok for them to do the same.

'I can tell you rural contractors are hurting just as much as dairy farmers. The last thing we need is for people to delaying paying us or trying to dictate pricing. We all have to live.”

Steve has called on dairy farmers to pressure Fonterra to ensure it treat its contractors fairly.

I have said all along that this has set Farmers up to fail,if you look on Hawkes bay News it shows a plane flown in from China with them on board, know one knows what it is doing there, wonder does PM know, GOSH it could be anybody, surely they have to go through CUSTOMS and to say why they are here, maybe to buy up FARMS that have had to sell out, this is all coming TRUE,they are taking over, as in AUSSIE buying up big Stations so they can grow crops to feed China, my two half pennies worth. Thankyou Sunlive

That's what I was also wondering. Set the farmers up to fail = cheap mortgagee sales = mass buy up for Key's Chinese chums. Remember, John Key always gets what John Key wants.

This whole thing is shameful. One day we will be looking for land to feed our people. As for Fonterra well...look at the money the CEO is on. There is some law Fonterra had to open its books to show the Chinese had it operated so the competition could be fair. The bloody Govt. has a lot to answer for. Better learn mandarin. If one says much more you are a rascist or xenophobic.
