Leaders to discuss sustainability

Jeanette Fitzsimons, Rod Oram and Cath Wallace are leading a Tauranga discussion on New Zealand's way forward past current economic crises.

The speakers will discuss how increasing fuel prices, worldwide food shortages, the global financial crisis and climate change are all caused by exploiting natural resources to fuel economic growth.

The Wednesday night discussion at Bethlehem College involves an analysis of whether current economic growth models are sustainable and what the correct path forward for New Zealand should be.

The Tauranga Environment Centre is organising this week's forum on economic sustainability.

The discussion will be followed by a public forum where the speakers will address questions from the audience.

The event is at Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, March 16 at 7pm. Tickets are available for $15 through Ticket Direct, or can be bought with cash on the door.

Proceeds go to the Tauranga Environment Centre Charitable Trust.

There will also be donation boxes to raise funds for Community Energy Action, a Christchurch-based community organisation that was severely impacted by the February 22 earthquake.

Perhaps just more hot air

The day I see speakers such as these arrive in a shared Toyota Prius, and refuse to speak at international conferences (planes spew out those greenhouse gasses) and bed down at youth hostels (far more environmentally friendly than those super hotels that think because they recycle a towel they're green)is the day I'll take there beliefs seriously. Leading by example , not words, is what's required.

HOT AIR FOR SURE
