Heavy rain in the forecast

The Bay of Plenty and Coromandel areas have been put on alert with the MetService issuing a watches and warnings for heavy rain.

A warning has been issued for the Coromandel as an active low pressure system to the north of New Zealand slowly moves southwards.

This system is preceded by strong to gale easterlies and brings a period of heavy rain to northern and central New Zealand, says the MetService.

'The heaviest falls are likely about Northland, northern Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula where a warning is in force.”

A weather watch has been issued for the Bay as the system makes its way down the country.

'The watch is for the possibility that rainfall accumulations will reach warning criteria.”

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines says it's going to be especially important for campers and holiday makers to monitor the forecasts, as many popular destinations look set for some prolonged rain and gusty winds.

'I certainly recommend packing a good book. People planning on spending time on the water should also be vigilant, especially about the east coast where high swell and strong winds are forecast.

'The outlook for next week is more positive, with a cold front pushing up the country early in the week clearing away most of the rain. Behind this front a ridge of high pressure will begin to develop and we will hopefully see a return to settled summer weather.”
