Tramper fractures ankle

A Tauranga woman suffered an ankle injury while walking a bush track near Waihi Beach yesterday.

Due to difficult terrain and the nature of the woman's injury, the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to airlift the 54-year-old to hospital.

Pilot Liam Brettkelly says the rescue helicopter was called to Orokawa Bay, the next bay around from Waihi Beach, at around 2pm.

Liam says the woman had been walking with a group when she slipped and fractured her ankle.

'Because of the difficult terrain and the patient's injury, the 'Port of Tauranga Rescue winch' was used to lower a St John Paramedic down to tend to the patient.

"Once her injured leg was stabilised, the medic and injured tramper where winched into the helicopter before being flown to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.”
