Taupo’s road free, why is ours tolled?

Driving on State Highway 1 via Taupo, motorists will have been able to negotiate a new bypass.
This would have cost the taxpayer a bob or two, as it includes a beautiful bridge over the Waikato River.
The most interesting aspect is that there is a complete lack of tolls.
So why is the greater Tauranga area lumbered with a second toll road, as yet incomplete?
I am sure Mr Simon Bridges and Mr Tony Ryall will have a satisfactory explanation.

That is state highway one and as well as that the volume of traffic is likely more on that road and so the spend is justified. The proposed new Toll road here is only state highway two, the number do not stack up, the cost to build here (like Route K) is rediculously high so Government / NZTA is correctly saying to Tauranga, if you want it then you have to "fill the gap", that gap is huge and so the only possible way is a toll road and have a lot more debt.

For whom the bell tolls

Because our local politicians couldn't wait 5 years for the Papamoa/Paengaroa part to be done by the Govt. for nothing. TCC etc supported and promoted the toll option and there is no guarantee this part of the Eastern Arterial will even be completed in 5years.When it is we will pay tolls for next 35 years.Furthermore this stretch of road was never classified high priority by the Govt and surely that tells you something.
