Wairakei stream unhealthy

Health warning signs are in place along the Wairakei stream bank in the vicinity of Gibson Place to Emerald Shores because of poor water quality.

Tauranga City Council suspects this is due to a low oxygen level in the water, but water testing has not confirmed this.

This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, February 14, published below.

A large number of grass carp fish introduced to the water way to manage aquatic weed have died.

Further water quality monitoring will be carried out over the next few weeks.

Stand up for our water

Posted on 15-02-2011 06:05 | By greaseman

The discharge of milk processing waste into the open drain. How does this happen? What is the penalty? The sanitary sewers are being blocked by restaurant grease. Do we have a grease trap ordinance in effect? Is it enforced? Restaurants must be responsible for their own grease waste. Grease Recovery Devices (GRDs) outperform any 19th century grease trap technology. They are a better technology all round. Restaurants must impliment "Best Kitchen Practices" for responsible grease management. Visit www.greasetrap.ca for "Best Kitchen Practices" as well as the environmental impact from restaurant grease. Sanitary sewer overflows result in raw sewage flowing into our streets, streams, lakes and basement. It is only our water that is being affected. We must start caring now.

THERE IS A GREASE TRAP RULE

But often these are not clean regualrly enough so overflow into teh sewers and block them up. Suimple answer is clean the fat traps.
