Win and loss in Gisborne

The Bay of Plenty Women's team returned home from a weekend of cricket in Gisborne with a win and a loss on their record sheet.

On Saturday, the Bay side lost its Northern Districts championship unbeaten record when Poverty Day won the Twenty20 encounter.

After winning the toss, the home side batted first and was dismissed for 110.

Daisy Franks returned the Bay's best bowling figures with 3/11, while Tia Robinson, who was making her debut for the Bay senior women's side, also grabbed three wickets.

While the young Bay side made a determined attempt for victory, they ran out of time to grab the win when the match finished with the Bay on 104/3.

Captain Sarah Steenson top scored with a gritty 39 with Jacinta Coleman finishing with 23 runs on the board.

Revenge was very much on the minds of the Bay of Plenty team on Sunday morning, when they met Poverty Bay in a 40 over affair.

Again, bowling first, the Bay of Plenty side kept the pressure up from the opening ball.

Shanelle Conwell, who was another making her senior team debut, bowled with real enthusiasm to finish with 3/23.

Bay skipper Sarah Steenson made it difficult for the opposition batters to hit out, finishing with two wickets for a solitary run off five overs.

Led by Jacinata Coleman, who top scored with 26, the Bay side got home with six wickets in hand.

Sarah Steenson again made a significant contribution with 19, with Anna Henson there at the end with an unbeaten 16 runs.

Bay of Plenty Coach Mark Webb says he was impressed with the team of Bay youngsters, who played with composure, over two days of hot and very testing conditions.

The Hamilton defeat of Waikato Valley has resulted in Bay of Plenty continuing to lead the ND standings by two points from Hamilton. The real test for the Bay team comes in two week's time when they take on Hamilton in the Waikato.
