Vote reminder for flag referendum

New Zealand's Chief Electoral Officer is urging the Kiwi public to make sure they're correctly enrolled ahead of the first referendum on the country's flag.

To be able to vote in the first referendum, people must be enrolled by Thursday, November 19. Voting papers will be sent out from Friday, November 20.

'If you're already enrolled, and have checked that your details are up to date, then that's great,” says Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden.

'But if you've moved house, or aren't sure, or know you're not enrolled, you need to get on and do it now. It's easy.”

People can check that their enrolment details are up to date by visiting: www.elections.org.nz or by calling: 0800 36 76 56.

Enrolment forms are available via the above channels, by Freetexting your name and address to 3676, or at any PostShop.

The referendum runs from Friday, November 20 until Friday, December 11, and will be held by postal vote.

Voters will be asked the question: 'If the New Zealand flag changes, which flag would you prefer?”

People will be asked to rank the five alternative flag designs from numbers 1 to 5, and are free to rank as many or as few as they wish.

The most preferred alternative will go to a second referendum in March 2016, where voters will be asked to choose between the current flag and the preferred alternative.

'We want all eligible New Zealanders to have the opportunity to get enrolled and have their say,” says Mr Peden.

Should Have Had

John Key has engineered the way these referendums to get the result he wants. He should have had the guts to put the current flag in the first referendum and saved a lot of money.Very devious.Vote to keep the original flag which is what the majority of New Zealanders want

Is it worth voting...

If you don't vote does it count as to keep the flag if you are enrolled?

Coming out

I initially thought a new flag was a silly idea, but when I disregarded the politics and reversed the "looking back" to WW1 to "looking forward" from WW1 I now think my dead relatives in Europe would approve our new identity as being away from Europe. So I bought a red fern flag for fun and was quite surprised to see that when hanging limp or just fluttering the stars on the flag looked just like the current flag. But given a breeze, the fern comes to life. So I have 'come around' and now quite like it - I surprised myself, and now, oddly, would support a flag change whatever the outcome.
