A Bay of Plenty girl given less than 24-hours to live following her birth has been granted approval to use medicinal cannabis.
Now seven-years-old, Zoe Jeffries was born with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, refractory seizure disorder, microcephaly, cortical visual impairment and severe global development delay.

The placenta in her mother's womb was a third of the size and Zoe was deprived of vital nutrients and oxygen.
On top of multiple medical conditions, she also suffers from around 100 seizures a day.
Her current medications include rivotril, vigabatrin, lamotrigine, phenytoin, levetiracetam, lactulose, mylanta, omeprazole and – when required – ondansetron, stesolid and midazolam.
Mum Karen Jeffries says from the research she has done over the years, she'd seen medical cannabis case studies and reports that showed a significant decrease in seizure activity and a better quality of life – something she definitely wanted for her daughter.
Zoe has ministerial approval to try Sativex for six months on a trial basis for spasms and refractory seizures.
While the family are happy with the approval, they are faced with the daunting task of trying to fund the scripts.
Each script will cost us $1050.00 and it is not funded by Pharmac.
This script will last approximately one-to-two months (dependant on trial and error dosages).
A Givealittle page has been set up to try and help fund the treatments, and so far the page has raised $3181.
'We are currently waiting to hear from WINZ to see if they can partially fund under the Disability Allowance,” says a description on the Givealittle page.
'By fate – Zoe's Mum (Karen) received a tax refund that was enough to cover the price of the very first script.
'Zoe has been on it for one week now and she has certainly relaxed – less spasms are equalling less seizures – but it is still very early days.
'If there is any chance you would like to help Zoe continue to try Sativex, in the hopes of providing her a better quality of life, we would be forever grateful.”

The govt has spent millions of tax payer dollars on their own cushy buildings and overseas apartments without consulting us. Personally, I'd rather my money helped families like Zoe's than luxurious waste on our undemocratic politicians.

Why is the cost of it so high if you can grow the stuff in your own garden or flower pot.(by Theodorus)
