The Thames-Coromandel District Council voted in favour of going ahead with the binding referendum at last week's full meeting.
The referendum is being run independently by Election Services andcouncil says it is taking a neutral stance on the issue.
Coromandel Registrar of Electors Lesley Christophers says all eligible Thames locals will need to enrol or update their enrolment details by September 9 to be able to vote.
The poll will be held by postal ballot and papers will be delivered from October 14, says Lesley.
'So only those people who are correctly enrolled will receive voting papers and be able to have a say in the election.
'This means it is important that newly eligible electors enrol as soon as possible and that electors who are currently enrolled check to make sure their enrolment details are up to date.”
Lesley says enrolling as a Parliamentary elector will also automatically enrol those people living in the Thames area.
People can also check their enrolment details on the roll at any PostShop, courthouse or public library.
'Anyone who has moved house or changed their name or other details should update their enrolment details to make sure these are correct,” adds Lesley. 'You can update your details by filling in a change of address form at your local PostShop or by filling in a new enrolment form.”
If you are not enrolled, forms are available from all PostShops, by calling 0800-367-656, by sending a free text with your name and address to 3676, or via the Elections Services website.
Locals who are on the unpublished roll or wish to vote as a non-resident ratepayer will need to apply to the Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske by phoning 0800-922-822 to cast a special vote.
