Police name Maketu jetty fall victim

Police have named 36 year old Rotorua woman Atiria Raupita as the person who died after falling six metres from the jetty at the entrance to the Kaituna River near Maketu on Monday. Her funeral will be held in Rotorua on Friday.

She fell from the jetty at about 11.30pm on Monday night and died at about 12.10am on Wednesday after repeated attempts by paramedics to save her.

Maketu Fire Chief Shane Beech was one of those who assisted paramedics with CPR on the woman.

The tide was out at the time and Atiria managed to fall onto hard sand.

Shane says the jetty is a popular fishing spot during summer, attracting crowds late into the evening.

Emergency services believe Atiria was with a number of her family when she was casting her line, misjudged her step and fell from the jetty.

St John medical staff say she went into cardiac arrest soon after hitting the ground.

The death was referred to the coroner.
