Players jostle for position

The quest to unearth home-grown talent for the 2015 Bay of Plenty Steamers continues, with teams announced for the side's official trial.

Next Wednesday the two teams, drawn from the Bayfair Baywide competition, will lock horns trying to impress head coach Clayton McMillan and assistant coach Rodney Gibbs ahead of the ITM Cup campaign.

The trial, at Rotorua International Stadium, is preceded by the trialists training together at Te Puke Rugby Club on Monday from 6pm.

The trial does not include players currently involved in Investec Super 15 or the World Rugby U-20 Championships, including the likes of captain and Blues Culum Retallick and Chiefs Sam Cane and Brodie Retallick.

Steamers head coach McMillan says the group is reflective of the players the coaching staff view as potential Steamers.

And while there is a percentage of players already contracted with the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union for the upcoming season, players still have the ability to push their individual cases.

'We haven't excluded the contracted guys from the trial,” says McMillan, 'so it's a legitimate trial and players can be assessed on their merit against guys that are already there.

'Nobody has popped out of the blue and said ‘here I am'. But we have been pleased with some individuals that have played pretty consistently over the course of the Baywide competition.”

The divide between the Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty is clearly evident, with the former boasting the majority of the trialists.

Competition frontrunners Tauranga Sports and defending champions Mount Maunganui both have nine, and Te Puke Sports eight.

The Eastern Bay is best represented by Whakarewarewa, with five, followed by Rotoiti's three, including former Mooloo Zak Hohneck and Steamer Joe Royal. Paroa have two.

After six weeks, Tauranga and Te Puke remain unbeaten, followed by Mount Maunganui and Rotoiti with four wins.

The bottom four spots on the ladder and taken by Eastern Bay sides – Whakatane Marist, Paroa, Opotiki and the winless Waikite.

Following the trial, the Wasps team will be named to play the Cavaliers in the first pre-season match, on June 24 in Katikati.

This provides one final opportunity for players to put their hand up for the 2015 Steamers ITM Cup team, which will be named in mid-July ahead of two ITM Cup pre-season matches against Auckland and Manawatu.

The Steamers trial is at Rotorua International Stadium from 6pm next Wednesday.
