Kopu public meeting tomorrow night

Locals are invited to a public meeting tomorrow night focusing on how to make Kopu a better place to do business.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council is inviting anyone with a business interest in the area to the meeting which will be held at the Kopu Station Hotel on Wednesday, from 5:30pm to 7pm.

Staff from council will be on hand to update locals on the planned broadband upgrade for Kopu, which is scheduled to take place early on Wednesday.

Chorus Industry and Communications Manager Gerard Linstrom will also be travelling from Wellington to provide an overview of what faster broadband can achieve for Kopu.

Council says it has worked proactively with Chorus to have the upgrade advanced from June 2016 to April 1, 2015.

'Slow internet speeds have been a major concern for business operators in the area.

'Mr Linstrom's visit provides an opportunity for council to give an update on what is being looked at to further develop Kopu as a great place to do business and make it a more attractive and functional gateway to the Coromandel.”

Examples of future work council plans to undertake includes the area's stormwater system, which is proposed in its 2015-2025 Long Term Plan, which is currently out for public consultation until April 9.

Council says the other considerations for Kopu's development includes the new Kopu Bridge, completed in 2011.

The bridge now provides businesses in the area with even better links to three major cities: Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga.

'Kopu has the potential to retain existing firms and attract other small to medium commercial and industrial businesses.

'As the gateway to the district, Kopu could be an attractive service centre node upon entry to the Coromandel Peninsula.”

Council adds: "Kopu could also be a recreational destination as it has access to the Hauraki Rail Trail, the Waihou River and the Firth of Thames."
