UPDATED 1.33PM: An investigation is underway to determine what caused a large house fire in Opotiki this morning.

Firefighters were called to the two storey dwelling on Fromow Rd, near the Opotiki Golf Course, just after 8am.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the house was well ablaze when firefigthers arrived.

She says crews spent most of the morning controlling the fire and working to protect neighbouring houses.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Firefighters are battling a large house fire in Opotiki this morning.

A two storey dwelling is completely "ablaze" on Fromow Rd.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the building is "well involved".

"Crews are battling to protect neighbouring properties."

There are reports of a large fire in Opotiki this morning.

The fire is believed to be at a building on Fromow Rd, near the Opotiki Golf Club.

Opotiki Fire Brigade is at the scene and extra help is reported to be coming from Ohope and Taneatua.
