Brisbane residents are being urged to start sandbagging their properties as category five cyclone Marcia hits land near Rockhampton in Queensland.
The cyclone's track is expected to bring the cyclone southwest across the state before it veers to the south and east, striking Brisbane itself on the way to the sea.
Cyclone Marcia will see winds of 300 kilometres-per-hours in some areas.
The core of the category five cyclone made landfall near Yeppoon this morning with a storm surge expected to be 3m above normal high tide.
There are 16,000 people living around the Yeppoon and surrounding coastal areas.
Yeppoon resident Andrew Moore told SunLive that flooding in his home, which is close to the beach, is almost inevitable.
'We're really starting to take the brunt of it now,” says Andrew.
'Even though it has been downgraded to a category four, the gum tree out the back has just snapped in half.
'There's a high chance that we'll see some flooding and that would cut us off from the mainland.
'We've known about the cyclone for over two days and have been preparing for it.
'But we really started to get worried when it went from a category two to a category four in a very short space of time.
'We've had a storm surge of seven metres.”
Queensland police are advising residents to stay indoors.
Winds are expected to be in excess of 285 kilometres-per-hour consistently, with gusts reaching 300 kilometres-per-hours in some areas.
