East Coast shooting victim named

The 50-year-old man fatally shot on the East Coast on Monday night has been named as Tumanako Tauhore.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with the Te Araroa man's death and is due to appear in Gisborne District Court today.


Two men have been arrested in relation to a shooting which led to the death of a 50-year-old man near Te Araroa on Monday night.

The accused, who is also from Te Araroa, is alleged to have killed Tumanako at a property about 6km northwest of Te Araroa, or 42km north of Ruatoria.

Another man, aged 32, has been charged with recklessly discharging a firearm in relation to the same incident on Monday night.

He has been bailed and will appear in Gisborne District Court on Monday.

Police say Tumanako arrived at the property with five or six other men about 7pm.

Shots were fired resulting in Tumanako's death.

Two men from the property then ran into a bush area near the settlement carrying firearms, but later gave themselves up.

Police have found two firearms they believe are linked to the shooting.
