Initially appointed as Tourism BOP trustee in 2008 during the heights of the global financial crisis, Paul later took over as chair from Graeme Marshall in January 2012.
Tourism BOP general manager Rhys Arrowsmith says Paul has provided outstanding strategic governance to the organisation through a period of significant challenge and change.
'His counsel has been invaluable,” says Rhys, 'and the legacy he leaves behind is a healthy organisation highly focussed on growing the region as New Zealand's most-loved tourism destination.”
Paul, commenting on his decision to step down, says his time with Tourism BOP has been very exciting, and has shown how good governance and a strong management team can make a huge difference to this important economic driver for the region.
He says; 'Post the Rena grounding, it was a time for the organisation to take a look at who we are as a region, and to take a more pragmatic approach to the future of tourism.
'I'm very proud to say that on all measures I leave knowing that the region is in very good growth, and the new leadership in Ian Smith will see this continue.”
Incoming chairman Ian Smith is the owner of the Waihi Beach Top Ten and Beach Haven Holiday Parks as well as Waihi Beaches' Fire Chief.
'As a tourism operator and with a passionate focus on the community, my new role is a good match,” says Ian, 'and will provide all-important continuity to execute on the organisation's ambitions.”
As part of the board rotation, Lucy Brake, who has served as a trustee, is also stepping down after seven-and-a-half years.
Rhys adds: 'I'd like to sincerely thank the board (both current and previous) for their support and courage to govern the organisation to make it one of New Zealand's highest performing Regional Tourism Organisations. Our future is very bright.”
