A Papamoa drift-trikes video doing the rounds on You Tube is being criticised by police over the riding involved.
The video, by Team Supertramp who called in at Papamoa-based Blokart Heaven last month, went online on February 2 and is now heading towards one million hits. Today the viewed figure stood at 900,747.
Police are taking a dim view of the video, which can be viewed below.
The video shows a trio of local drift-trikers playing in early morning traffic along Marine Parade and in the downtown Mount Maunganui shopping area – as well as the trikes on the track at the Papamoa venue.
But while the video is providing international publicity for Blokarts, Tauranga police are taking a dim view.
'In light of the video, we are speaking again with riders involved to decide whether any further action needs to be taken,” says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager senior sergeant Ian Campion.
He's urging the owner of the car one of the riders bumped into to contact police if there is any damage.
Blokarts general manger Matt Beckett says there was no damage to the car when one of the riders was tripped and fell against the rear bumper.
'The (car) alarm didn't pop,” says Matt. 'The guys doing the editing do a particularly good job. There were no alarms, no honking in real life. It's all added, and it's given people reason to get upset.
'The alarm didn't go off on the car and they stopped to see if there were any marks on the car. They would have left a note.
'I know the three people, they have worked for us for a long time and are some of the more reasonable, decent young kids you would hope to find. So they are not out to destroy stuff.”
The video by the popular You Tube channel was never commissioned as a marketing exercise as such, says Matt.
'They were over here, they tracked us down themselves from what I understand,” he says. 'They were shooting here at the track and wanted to get some sunrise and sunset shots.
'It seemed a harmless idea at the time. We've already spoken to the cops, spoken to the senior sergeant in Tauranga and they are not impressed with it and it's not going to happen again.
'But the guy's being reasonable about it. We've been given a proper talking to over it, which is fair enough.”
They have recently sold their first rental fleet to a Christchurch operator, and the video has lifted international interest says Matt.
'They are not available as a retail product,” he adds. 'Part of the problem with them as a retail thing is they require a lot more than your off-the-shelf variety of battery. They are made especially for us to handle the current that we need.
'But we have got heaps of interest for it internationally and this has pumped it up even further as you would expect.”

Young people having a good time - this certainly cannot stand. Thankfully the police have solved all the other crime in the city so they can devote their full attention to this.

they weren't rocketing down the middle of Fraser St into Courtney Rd from Merivale hill in the dark like the residents there like to do.

Not cool, keep it for the track. We saw 3 skate boarders one morning coming down the Kaimais being filmed by the car in front. Now thats "Stupid". Death defying.
The fun has gone out of life

The police are over-reacting here. These youth seem decent. Why don't the police get out of their offices and off their iphones and lock up criminals and violent offenders? The bit about damage to the car makes me laugh. Has anyone reported a scratch to their car to the police? if so what was the result? Probably nothing. Please don't alienate decent community members in the rush to become politically correct.

How old are are you..12? It's all very well having fun but how funny is it for the person who's car got scratched or the next time they do it and a car or truck hits them?

These people used something on a public road in a manor likely to cause injury or accident or distress to other road users! If a car reversed out or came around the corner and killed one of them and you were the driver you'd be yelling wheres the police. Why were they doing this. In the video it shows them using a proper track that's where they should have stayed. As for damage to the car the impact set the alarm off. If you think that's ok next time you stand between the car and the impact!

If you or I decided to drive a lawn tractor on the road and made a nuisance of ourselves, I bet we would get busted for hooning for sure? Surs skate boards and scooters can be a pain in the butt, but they don't have engines. These people have put an engine on the machines and drove them recklessly on the road? Amongst traffic and pedestrians? If these people don't get charged for driving unregistered and uninsured motor vehicles on the road, then the law really is an ass. For a promotional video, a permit could have been sought, the police would prolly have helped.... unless these hoons are bought to justice, what is it going to teach copy cats? That it is ok to motorise something and go play in traffic? Come on Ian, get real, they are law breaking hoons? Punishment is needed and appropriate?

Please note in the article it says that the alarm didn't go off on the car but the sound was edited in for effect. Obviously it worked! Great promotion but don't I condone it

As an older person awesome. Great ad. Small amount of risk but the outcome amazing.
