More people may have been caught up in a Facebook scam which has already duped victims across the country, including Papamoa and Katikati.
Isaac James Culmer, 19, was arrested by police earlier this week and charged with 17 counts of obtaining by deception.
Isaac Culmer appeared in court today charged with 17 counts of obtaining by deception.
He briefly appeared in the North Shore District Court today and has been bailed to a Whakatane address.
He will remain there on a 24-hour curfew and is due back in court later this month.
Culmer, who is also known as Isaac Calmer, Isaac James or James Culmer, is accused of using the Facebook name ‘Sumwone Spechal' to advertising an Apple MacBook Pro for sale.
The catch being the MacBook didn't exist.
North Shore Police Sergeant Mike Flatt says Culmer's alleged offending took place over the past 8-12 weeks.
'But we believe there could be others who've dealt with the accused as far back as 12 months,” he adds.
Mike says the scam ran into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Police are asking for anyone who have had dealings with Culmer to contact them.
'We need to hear from anyone else who has paid money for a computer from Culmer and never received it,” says Mike.
'So far we have a total of 17 cases.”
